Global Citizenship through Student Action: Global Competencies and Purpose Learning
Chad Detloff | Director of Professional Learning and Curriculum | Global Education Benchmark Group Local student action connected to global issues is key to both global competency-based education and purpose learning. Intentionally designing learning opportunities for this student action, with the optimum balance of guidance and student choice, is essential but often the last piece to fall in place for schools. How can we help students explore their purpose and empower them to develop the skills they need to take meaningful action in that exploration? Using data, research, and numerous school-based examples from the 250 GEBG-member schools (across 15 countries), this workshop will offer an overview of the most current research on global competencies, before going more in-depth on student action including student outcomes, curriculum design, and assessment. |
Putting Purpose into Daily Practice
Dave Mochel | CEO/Coach/Consultant | Applied Attention Consulting Identifying purpose is one thing, using attention and energy purposefully on a daily basis is quite another. We live in a demanding and distracting world that puts a premium on creating comfort and avoiding discomfort. This makes focusing on purpose a challenge. With practice, we can master the discipline of consistently re-orienting ourselves toward what really matters when we inevitably lose sight. |
Purpose Clarification Workshop
Ross Wehner | Founder | World Leadership School This half-day workshop creates a space for teachers to explore gifts and drop into story to arrive at a clearer conception of who they are and how they connect to the world. Teachers need to do the hard work of clarifying their own purpose before they can help students do the same. By communicating their purpose clearly, teachers will build trust, help students feel safe, and create an innovative learning environment. “Vulnerability is the birthplace of innovation” - Brené Brown |

Swing at the Mortar, Not at the Bricks
Stephanie Carrillo | Director of Diversity and Inclusion | Campbell Hall Episcopal
When students become passionate about issues of social justice and desire to tear down barriers to equity, how do we empower them to become agents of change and leaders in their communities? How can we teach students about systemic injustice and systems of oppression while also affirming and supporting who they are? Learn how one teacher used the Civil Rights Movement, the Chicano Student Movement, the Gay Right Movement and each movements’ contemporary counterpart as a way to examine the roots and repercussions of systemic oppression, unpack the power of collective action, and help students identify their individual strengths as pathways to activism. See how the principles of SEED seminar, the social justice curriculum standards of Teacher Tolerance and resources from Facing History and Ourselves were combined to create a class where students learned how oppressive systems are kept in place and found how they were each uniquely positioned to disrupt and dismantle those systems.

"But I don't have a passion."
Jose Hernandez | Co-Founder | Legacy Mastery Academy
Gerard Vargas | Co-Founder | Legacy Mastery Academy
The pressure of "finding your passion early and following it" can be very daunting, especially for students with limited life experiences, limiting beliefs, low self-esteem, lack of role models, and other stressors that negatively impact their outlook on life. Experience and take home hands-on brain research-based lessons that foster a purpose driven life in our youth, especially students who struggle with identifying a passion.

The Wildwood Crossover Project: How 2nd Graders and 9th Graders engage in a collaborative learning experience, working and learning together to make an impact
Holli Plummer | Faculty | Wildwood School
Alli Boas | Faculty | Wildwood School
Throughout this session, participants will have the opportunity to examine an existing Wildwood School project in which 2nd and 9th grade students are working together to explore important global topics. Facilitators will invite participants to learn about the process, curriculum, lesson plans, and final product by studying a case study, including learning about different ways to leverage a “take-action” culminating project. Participants will also have opportunities to work in small groups to generate new project ideas for classroom implementation based around the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
